More from the "How 'bout that?" department

I ended up listing six items on Ebay. Strangely, all of the Old Navy stuff is getting the most attention. No bids yet, but several folks watching the items. The nearly-new shoes by Banana Republic didn't even sell, and the J. Crew skirt only has two watchers. (I started them both off at $2.99, surely the starting price wasn't a turn-off?)

Who would have known that so many folks turn to Ebay to get cheap clothing even cheaper? In the past I've given all of my cheaper clothing to charity and put only high-dollar items on Ebay. Perhaps I should rethink that strategy.

Meanwhile, I'll try to decide whether I should relist those shoes...

I listed a very expensive bag on eBay at a low opening bid, thinking it'd go up and up--and got a whopping $50 for it. I had great pictures, a good description, the whole bit. But my old Banana/Gap-type stuff always gets more than half of retail.

My theory is that the high-end designer fakes are so rampant on eBay that most bidders don't believe the real stuff isn't fake, which keeps prices down on those items. Low-end stuff doesn't have that problem, so the bidding wars really go nuts on those auctions.

good going on the ebay stuff! I had only two clothing items that didn't sell and one was a pair of old navy cargo pants. go figure. I am starting all my auctions at 99cents these days to attract buyers, I want money for stuff but more important is to get rid of it (for me).

Of course...that's when I actually PUT stuff on ebay...I am sooo behind

Good for you, SMB. I'm still trying to ramp up to listing some stuff. I'm accumulating a small pile in the basement (mostly toys L has lost interest in) but it doesn't seem to happen.

Have you figured out a minimum amount of money you need to make in a transaction to make it worth the time? Just curious.

I’m actually trying to figure that out, and really the reason I didn’t set the starting prices on those two items any lower. Anything less than $2.99 and I’d rather have the tax deduction, frankly (and in the case of the shoes, at least, I guess that’s what I’ll be getting!).

I’m going to look online to see if any guidelines exist that will help me answer this question—or does anyone know? Caitlin?

Anonymous, I had the same experience with a Coach bag I put on Ebay. Part of me didn't mind, though, because an ex had given it to me and I just wanted to be rid of it. In fact, it was sort of thrilling to let it go for so little money, for that reason alone. :)
