The mailing list I love to hate

I wonder, how many of you folks know about Daily Candy? I have a feeling it's not too popular with the PF blogger crowd.

I get Daily Candy Everywhere and Daily Candy Boston. I once asked a friend where she found all the cute trinkets she talked about on her blog. She told me she learned about them from Daily Candy, and that I simply had to sign up.

I did, and for a while I liked it, too. I found my milkman through Daily Candy, and Lotta Jansdotter. Then the emails started getting under my skin. Maybe it was the extremely formulaic writing ("sassy" little intro, one-line zinger at the end), maybe it was some of the stuff being pushed (disposable bamboo plates, Bag, Borrow or Steal), maybe it was the fact that their target audience seems to be 20-something Sex and the City wannabes (my idea of a Sex and the City wannabe is based on hearsay, as I've not seen a single episode).

These days I usually just open the emails just to see if by some miracle the writing style has changed (nope), glance at the picture, and then hit delete. But for some reason, I can't bring myself to unsubscribe...

I totally agree. I signed up for it because they occasionally feature books but now I just delete it most of the time because I find it so obnoxious and infuriating. I really hate it when they do travel features on these cool places but then every hotel they mention costs a fortune.

I also meant to say how cool it is that you have a milkman. We had one when I was a kid-- I always liked the little order form that you'd leave in the milkbox out on the step!

The dairy industry has gotten pretty high tech...you can place an order online, or create a standing order, and the funds are withdrawn from my checking account.

Still a charming concept, though. And I swear the milk tastes better out of a glass bottle. :)
