New windshield, strange reactions
I recently replaced the windshield in my 2000 Civic. The surface of the glass was pitted throughout; I imagine it was caused by the sand and salt that are sprinkled so liberally on the roads here in winter. Driving had become a headache, especially when heading into the sun as I often do on my commute.
The reactions I encountered, from friends to the people at the glass company itself, surprised me. Without exception, everyone reacted as though this was a somewhat unusual matter. "So there's no actual crack?" the woman at the glass company asked. "Interesting; I've never heard of someone replacing the windshield for pitting," a friend said.
One of the very few reasons I could think of for this being uncustomary is that most people must replace their car before they feel the need to replace its windshield. I spent $250.00 getting this done, which is less than the average car payment. Seems reasonable to me!

Bah--my insurance (Liberty Mutual) would only pay if it were cracked. A co-worker suggested I take a hammer to it, but I couldn't do that.
My next financial project is getting a better deal on insurance.
Yep--Dairy Joy! It was hopping yesterday at 3:30 p.m.
I had the same experience as bluebird. Driving from Phoenix to LA - drove through a horrible sand storm. Winshield was pitted so bad I could barely see out of it when driving into the sun, or a t night w/ oncoming traffic. State Farm replaced it no charge.
I've been thinking of doing this for the last 6 months. I can't seem to get the inside 'scum' off the window no matter what I use to clean the glass. I also have noticed that the minor pits are causing headlights to halo a lot and blind me at night. I guess it does not help that I don't keep my eyeglasses sparkling all the time either.
Hm, $250? I think that's worth it if it prevents me from having an accident at night.
Be sure to check with your insurance, as they might pay for it. Apparently mine is a bit on the stingy side! Even so, it was well worth the $250.
